Federal lawsuit alleges the university failed to adequately address discrimination affecting Jewish and Israeli students

The Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Civil Rights Division has filed a lawsuit against the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) over violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 regarding antisemitism. The allegations were made after a federal investigation found that UCLA did not meet its obligations under federal law in responding to reported incidents on campus. The reports included assaults on Jewish and Israeli students, exclusion from campus areas, and disruptions to their educational access, particularly during demonstrations and encampments in spring 2024.

Federal officials, including Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon and First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli, stated that the case concerns claims that UCLA did not adequately respond to reported discrimination and harassment involving Jewish and Israeli students following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks.

U.S. Attorney Essayli said, “Universities have an obligation to maintain safe and inclusive campuses for all students.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Assistant Attorney General Dhillon as she oversees DOJ civil rights investigations and cases.
  • For Assistant U.S. Attorney Essayli as he handles the prosecution of Justice Department cases.
  • For Acting Attorney General Blanche as he heads the Justice Department and its efforts to ensure university campus safety.
  • For the healing and protection of students and faculty impacted by the threat of antisemitism.
